Career Change Can Be A Good Thing
Career Change Can Be A Good Thing Whats your reaction when you hear, things are going to change? Do you feel fear and anxiety? Or do you get a sense of excitement and optimism? For many, change is viewed with concern and worry. What will I lose? is often the first thought. And yes, change does lead to some loss. I should know. I lost my first job due to a massive change in the accounting industry when my employer Arthur Andersen went under with the Enron debacle. In the media at the time, we heard all about the loss how 80,000 people in 90 countries lost their jobs and how the faith in one firm was lost forever. There is another part to the story however that you didnt hear -how much was gained through this change. For me, the end of Andersen forced me to deal with a career I wasnt happy with. It was a turning point for me, one that led me to the career coaching and radio hosting that I do (and love) today. And Im not alone in this experience. Many of my Andersen colleagues have changed careers. Its not just Anderse n either. Ive been working with a corporate client recently who wants their people to see the opportunities in an upcoming merger. Over the last few months Ive been coaching each team member to see how this change could be a blessing in disguise. Yes, its still a challenge to say goodbye to each other yet at the same time, its exciting to explore new career paths and opportunities both within and outside the merged company. Change is the one constant we can count on in our careers. The key is not to fear change but to leverage it to move your career forward. Tomorrow, Ill be speaking to a group of Columbia University alumns about How to Successfully Navigate Corporate Change. If youre in that group, sign up here!Ill also be sharing tips and ideas on leveraging change on my radio show Making a Living with Maggie today at 4pm EST/1pm PST on SIRIUS 112/XM 157. With flexible hours and good rates, VIPKID is an intriguing way to earn supplemental income. While not for everyone, it might be for you. For many teachers and other young professionals, a single full-time job may not be enough to satisfy the little extras in life that go a long way towards fulfillment. However, getting a second job is not always feasible due to time constraints, a lack of flexibility, or simply exhaustion after a long day at work. Thankfully, the spread of technology alongside growing global interconnectedness means that exciting new remote work options are more available than ever before. One such niche, e-teaching, offers a terrific opportunity for those individuals seeking to earn a few extra dollars. Highlighted by a Fast Company as among the âMost Innovative Companiesâ, VIPKID is a platform that provides prospective teachers with the ability to choose their teaching schedule without having to sacrifice other income streams. The service is ideal for professionals who are seeking: A work-from-home scenario that makes financial sense A straightforward and low-stress supplemental income stream A flexible way to earn money while still retaining autonomy A source of income that can work well with a traveling life style Click here to apply and start teaching English online While very advantageous, especially for teachers seeking to monetize their skills outside the classroom, the model isnt ideal for everyone. We had a chance to speak with one of VIPKIDâs top teachers to learn more about the company. What exactly is VIPKID? VIPKID is an ESL teaching platform for children between the ages of four and 12. The company connects Chinese students to tutors from around the world for short one-on-one lessons focused around developing better English language skills. The company was founded in 2013, and now includes teachers from across the globe. Its platform is compliant with Common Core Standards for the US and requires applicants to have prior teaching experience. Teachers can sign up for the service by completing the application process and start teaching as soon as theyâre accepted. VIPKID allows teachers to set the hours they prefer to teach before matching them with students who can request specific time slots. VIPKID offers a pay rate that is derived from performance as well as a base rate determined for each teacher following the initial interview process. How can I apply for VIPKID The initial application to be a VIPKID teacher is one of the more rigorous processes required by a freelancer service. VIPKID is concerned with offering its students the best quality lessons possible, something that shines through in their students-first approach. As such, the application process requires several steps and although potential hires are not required to have teaching-specific degrees, they do need prior experience in education. Eligibility To get started, VIPKID asks that applicants fulfill the following requirements: A Bachelorâs degree (it doesnât have to be in an education-specific field) At least some experience teaching in K-12 in the US or Canada (thereâs no minimum component) Availability to sign a minimum six-month work contract which can be renewed Step-by-step process 1. Fill out application If you meet these requirements, the first step is to fill out a quick application on the companyâs website and send them your CV. 2. Online meeting with a recruiter and small test After filling out the application, you will be invited for a 30-minute session to meet with a VIPKID recruiter, where youll be expected to simulate a lesson with the recruiter. Your interview will be a large factor in determining your base pay rate per lesson, so itâs always useful to go in as prepared as possible. Youll also be asked to undergo a short test to verify your credentials. 3. Full lesson with VIPKID teacher Once you finish with the initial online meeting with the recruiter, the next step will be to prepare and then practice teaching a full lesson with a VIPKID teacher. 4. Sign a contract and provide additional documentation If you qualify move ahead, youâll be asked to sign your initial contract, provide additional documentation, and then pass a background check. The application is quite rigorous; VIPKIDS accepts only 10 percent of its applicants, a sign that they constantly look for the most talented candidates. What is it like working for VIPKID ? By and large, VIPKID is considered a great employer by its teachers, and thats supported by online communities of teachers. One of the biggest positives highlighted by the platformâs teachers is the flexibility it provides. VIPKID teachers can choose their availability for time slots and can select as many or as few as they like. âFor me this is a much better situation because I can work while my kids sleep, and I donât have to leave home, said Amy, a teacher at VIPKID, in an interview for Money Under 30. In-person tutoring would likely require me to get childcare.â One small area of concern for some prospective teachers might be timing. Because the children being taught are in China, scheduling could mean being prepared to teach during hours normally considered âoffâ. Another positive attribute touted by teachers is how the lesson model works. There is little prep work involved considering most lessons are pre-planned and teachers simply have to follow them. Per Amy, The PowerPoints are very helpful. Occasionally I will need to add content to the end of a lesson if a student is advanced and knows the material well alreadyâ¦Many of the courses follow the same format and overlap some in content. I keep all my standard props nearby and use them as needed. An area that may complicate matters for some are the technical requirements. These may put off some teachers who are constantly on the go. The company requires the following for lessons: A laptop or desktop computer (mobile devices arenât powerful enough) An operating system newer than Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.8x An Intel Core i3 processor or better, at least 4GB of ram, and the most recent version of Flash An internet connection of at least 20 Mbps A computer camera A good headset with a microphone Many of these requirements are easy to meet with a current generation computer. But, internet connections vary significantly from location to location, meaning that traveling teachers may require some advanced logistics. How do teachers get paid? Teachers who are accepted by VIPKID can earn between $14 and $22 per hour. But know that each lesson is only 30 minutes long. Pay rates are determined by the base pay which is established following your initial interview, as well as incentives for starting lessons on time and bonuses based on the number of lessons completed monthly. In addition to the variable pay scale, teachers are paid directly for the lessons they teach. The single biggest benefit VIPKID presents for teachers seeking tutoring opportunities is maximum flexibility. There is no minimum (or maximum) requirement relating to how many lessons must be taught per day, week, or month. Instead, users are incentivized to teach more with additional bonuses. These average the number of completed lessons per month. For instance, teachers receive a bump in payment if they teach more than 45 lessons every month and if they start lessons promptly. Payouts happen monthly, and generally occur during the middle of the month. There are areas where the company is improving No job is perfect, though critiques leveled at VIPKID are fairly minimal. Standardization of information One big area where the company can improve is standardizing the information it provides to its teachers. The company has a full library of pre-made lessons that are well-liked by teachers. However, some have reported receiving conflicting answers when querying VIPKID. There are many discussions by teachers in the Facebook groups about what we can and canât do, said Amy. Teachers send in support tickets to ask but often receive conflicting answers. There would be a lot less confusion if all the ârulesâ would be consolidated in one document as an official statement from the company.â Long-distance scheduling Another area that may be less than optimal for some prospective VIPKID applicants is scheduling. As we mentioned, students are exclusively based in China. Although teachers can work from anywhere in the world, the âpeakâ hours for students are generally in the afternoons. This means some teachers may need to wake up or work at uncommon hours early in the morning or past midnight. Click here to apply and start teaching English online Teaching for VIPKIDS: Pros and Cons ProsCons Very high earnings potentialLengthy application process Flexible work hoursNon-standardized of information for teachers Pre-planned, standardized lessonsLong-distance scheduling Summary VIPKID presents a fantastic way for young teachers and professionals to supplement their income or partially fund their own globetrotting adventures. With flexible scheduling and pay rates that can reach as high as $22 per hour, the platform delivers a way to maintain freedom and work as much as you like despite some minor room for improvements. In keeping with the freelancer economy model, VIPKID empowers you to generate extra income, work from home, and even see the world without having to worry where your next paycheck is arriving from. Yes, You Do Have to Talk to Your Kid About Mental Health  Heres How
Yes, You Do Have to Talk to Your Kid About Mental Health Heres How Being a parent means youll eventually need to have tough conversations with your kids, whether its about explaining the birds and the bees or talking about grief and loss. But while these kinds of topics are mora prevalent to discuss, theres one subject that needs to be brought to the forefront and its the discussion about mental health. But why is it imperative for parents to talk to their kids about mental health? Well, according to postdoctoral psychologist, Brad Stevens, Ph.D., having an ongoing and open conversation about mental health is key for the development of their psychological wellness. Talking to your kids about mental health will elend only destigmatize the topic, but also help kids to become more self-aware and psychologically minded, Stevens tells SheKnows. And when self-aware and psychologically minded kids grow up, theyll more likely grow into self-aware and psychologically minded adults, continues Stevens. And with today being World Mental Health Day, theres no better time to start discussing this important subject with your kids. Thats why we connected with a couple of experts to explain how you can navigate this topic with your child. Because while it might be hard to discuss, doing so will elend only benefit your kids relationship with you but their relationship with themselves, too.Build a capacity to discuss mental health as early as possible. Before you can begin to have in-depth conversations aboutmental health with your child, its important for you to begin building a strong trusting foundation between you and them. We have to make sure that the child has a foundation of trust with us and the history of what we call emotional attunement, which builds the ability to have whats called a top-down functioning (aka the ability to think or talk about something as abstract as mental health), says family psychologist and author of, Mona Delahooke. If you talk to a child about s omething before they have the infrastructure of dealing with emotions and seeking help when they need it, its leid going to help because you cant just talk about mental health. You have to live it.So how can a parent begin to build this trust and foundation? They should learn how to be more attuned to their own emotions to develop a healthier and better relationship with their own mental health. Infants, toddlers, and children need adults around them who are attuned to their emotional needs, says Delahooke. Its not what you say to your child, its how you are with your child. Our presence and body language form the infrastructure for psychological resilience and mental health.Help your kid assemble their feelings.Parents/caregivers can help their kids begin to develop a vocabulary so they can make sense of and understand their own internal experiences and talk about them with others they trust, says Stevens. Doing this will help your child begin to understand and become more attuned to what theyre feeling on a daily basis, which, in turn, can help them have an easier time identifying how others are feeling as well. When youre beginning to help assemble their emotions, you want to ask them, Whats the name of the emotion youre feeling? What are the sensations youre noticing in your body? What are the sentences (i.e., thoughts) going through your head? And what do you feel like doing right now (i.e., whats your action urge, such as crying or hiding), according to Stevens. Dont worry if they dont know how to answer these questions right away. Identifying what theyre feeling will take practice, and the assembling will go much easier once they learn how to match the correct words with their emotions. Just give them the space to do so. When you rush them, they cant learn and grow and may begin to resent this practice.Explain how they can view their own emotions.Once you help them identify what theyre feeling, you also want to articulate how they can begin to manage and view these emotions from a more positive standpoint. While kids might begin to have a grasp on what theyre experiencing, you dont want them to find ways to avoid these feelings or not have the ability to manage them in a healthy manner when theyre uncomfortable dealing with them. For instance, Stevens suggests for parents/caregivers to communicate that although emotions might feel uncomfortable, emotions arent dangerous and dont last forever they dont happen randomly they dont have to control how we act and there are always things we can do to make them feel more manageable and less intense. At the end of the day, you want your kid to understand thatemotions are nothing to be afraid of. And even though society may insinuate that theres one right way for children to connect with their emotions, thats just not how it works.Be careful not to stigmatize mental illnesses.Of course, when you begin to talk about mental health with your child, its natural for the conversation about mental h ealth challenges to come up. But before you start going down the list of naming every single disorder under the sun, you want to be careful that youre not stigmatizing them in any way.According to Delahooke, you should try to talk about individuals who children know and reflectively ask the questions like have you noticed anything about Uncle Johnny you would like to talk or ask me about? Let children lead and you follow. To avoid stigmatizing mental illnesses, it might be best to help children develop compassion for those who suffer. Parents can explain that sometimes people find themselves feeling really stuck maybe theyre having trouble understanding their thoughts and feelings, maybe theyve stopped doing things that deep down they want to be doing, or maybe theyve started doing things theyd rather not be doing. No matter what the case, there are always adults who are available to help people get unstuck, says Stevens. Model what a healthy relationship with mental health looks like. While you can talk the talk, you also want to walk the walk. Parents/caregivers who showcasehow they maintain and regulate their own emotions and mental health will have an easier time communicating with their kids about their mental health because the kids are already familiar with this language. When parents/caregivers demonstrate for their kids their own communication/discussion about their own internal experiences, it normalizes this process for their kids and facilitates their kids learning to do this for themselves, says Stevens. If youre unsure of how to actually walk the walk, Stevens suggests for you to label your own emotions and identify the cause(s) for your own reactions in front of your age-appropriate kids. Plus, you can also model your engaging in-adaptive activities to render your own experiences of uncomfortable emotions to be more manageable.Make it a routine. If you want your child to develop a healthy relationship with their mental health, its ideal to implem ent these conversations and vocabulary into your daily interactions with them. This means you want to discuss emotions and mental health, not just when theyre experiencing a bad day, but when theyre having good days, too. When conversations about mental health become the norm, children will become more comfortable talking and identifying their own and others emotions and have fewer inclinations to resist talking about their experiences with their parents/caregivers.However, keep in mind that its normal to have your kid resist these kinds of conversations, especially in the beginning. While you can see if your kid might be willing to write or draw about their emotions if theyre resisting, Stevens suggests not to push it. If your kid continues to resist and/or has a really tough time, you should respect that and make space for it by letting your kid know that thats okay and that youll be here if/when they change their mind and want to talk, says Stevens. Parents/caregivers being appro priately responsive to their kids is also a key ingredient in the recipe for their kids psychological wellness. After all, we just want whats best for our kid(s), right? Right. Raven Ishak--This article originally appeared onSheKnows.
